A registered youth group of 25 young people in Laisamis
Merille Indigenous Morans for Change is a registered youth group of 25 young people, 20 morans and 5 young women, based in Laisamis Constituency, Marsabit County. The group was registered in December 2024.
We use drama and peer dialogue to end FGM and to open economic opportunity for women and girls in pastoralist communities.
The group is led by Hamed.
Contact the groupWe reach the young men who keep these norms alive
In our communities, morans hold real cultural influence over marriage, family decisions and who gets heard.
Most work on FGM and women's empowerment targets women and girls. We reach the young men who keep these norms alive, peer to peer, in Rendille and Samburu.
Young women are members
Young women are members of the group, not just beneficiaries. Five of our 25 members are young women.
Drama for change
We have performed in Laisamis, Merille, Namarei, Lontolio and Ngurnit, reaching over 500 people.
Our shows explained a government backed economic inclusion programme so the poorest households, especially women, could understand it and join.
Community facilitation
Our members have facilitated more than 10 community meetings for an international development partner, through Feiyah Action Network's work against FGM in Marsabit.
Nursery
We raise mwarubaini (neem) seedlings and vegetables, creating income for members and supporting local climate resilience.
